how we play...

this is sophia at play. this is a pretty standard activity for her... loading and unloading plastic shoe boxes with toys, reading books and flipping pages, banging on a drum, stacking cups, or just laying on the floor, looking outside. these are generally quiet activities, except for the random music that comes from the various toys around her that she might bump or activate during the process. this precious time, before she crawls, is dwindling. most fifteen-month-olds are walking, yelling, and generally wreaking havoc. not this one. she really could sit there like that all day- or at least until she gets hungry, needs a change, or just lays down and goes to sleep.
last night my sister dreamt that sophia began crawling. around sophie's first birthday i was so hungry for us to meet that milestone. i ached at watching sophie's peers walk their first steps before she was even able to shimmy around on her belly. now i understand that she will do what she will do when she is ready to do it- and that all kids are that way. she gets around by rolling and shifting and sitting up. she gets into things- her toys, and things that she knows she's not supposed to get into. she has access.
she has also begun to sign. she signs for more, all done, hungry/eat, up and "over there". she's kind of bossy. she is able to voice her displeasure when she is upset with something we're doing (or not doing). i am glad for this communication. it shows me that she understands what is going on around her and that she wants to interact.
so in these quiet moments, when sophie is just quietly ordering her world, i marvel at how far we've come. i am anxious for what will be next. i know that sophie will grow beyond this quickly- and i want to enjoy it for as long as it lasts.
